This scrape off technique (Suri-Hagashi 擦り剥がし) is not very common. And for this reason, it is used to a limited extent by a small group of artists

歴史 History

This kozuka 小塚  was made by Narimasa 就方 however Haynes reads this artist as Naritaka 成高, I think this is the 5^th Generation, Go-dai 五代. When this Kozuka  小塚 was made by Narimasa 就方 he was 67 years old.His family name is Umetada 梅忠, as a personal name he used Kajiuemon 加治右衞門

He is a son of Umetada Yukisada 梅忠恭貞 and grandson of Umetada Noritsugu 梅忠就受

Narikata 就方 worked in Edo, Musashi kuni 江⼾, 武蔵国 in the later part of the 18th century. The Suri-Hagashi 擦り剥がし technique is not used by many blacksmiths

Shibu-ichi 擦り剥がし is a traditional Japanese copper / silver alloy. The name translates into English as “one quarter”. Shibu-ichi was often used to decorate a samurai swords handle and scabbard. Shib-uichi has a nominal composition of 75% copper and 25% silver but can range from 5% – 60% silver
